The History of War and Wine are Intertwined

Join military historian and MTSU professor Dr. Derek Frisby and retired MTSU professor and viticulture/enology expert Dr. Tony Johnston on a thirteen-day trip to the Czech Republic, Austria and Germany. Central Europe has a long history of wars, large and small, and an equally long history of cultivating grapes and producing wines. Historically, as military forces travel and engage in battles, beer, wine, and distilled spirits have been used for everything from pain relief to refreshment, and locally produced products are frequently secured “on the go.” This region is no exception.

As we travel through this historic region of Europe we’ll visit historic sites related to both regional and world wars and cites that reveal the culture of the region through the production and sale of beer and wine. We’ll visit the brewery where Pilsner beer was invented in 1842 and a German beer hall opened in 1589. Several wineries will be visited as we explore the range and variety of wines produced in the region, each of which are unique to the locations in which the grapes they’re made from are grown. Most of these wines are not exported to the US, so you may want to plan to bring a bottle or two home with you!
